After "collecting" a few wine bottles over the years so that I could remember the winerys from whence they came, I decided to take photos of their labels so I could recycle the originals. Since then, I have also used this method for recipes on the back of boxes, sea shells on the beach (rather than bringing a million home, I've started simply photographing them), and other simple items which I'd like to remember, or which are pretty, but which I don't necessarily need or want taking up space in my home.
While doing some research on-line this afternoon, I came across an article which offers other photography suggestions, such as mementos from past vacations, broken toys, clothes, etc. Once you're done photographing, you can decide if the item should be kept (photographs can be a great "insurance policy" in case the item ever gets lost, damaged, or destroyed), discarded (if broken), or donated (such as gently used clothing).
