What will they think?

Rate this Entry
I bowl in a league once a week. We will not be bowling again until mid-January. I am participating in a study at the University of Alabama Dental School. During this study I will get pins implanted into my lower gum to stablize my dentures. On our last day of bowling I told my team mates that I would be getting "implants" during the weeks we are off. This should give them something to talk about! They are probably expecting my bustline to be somewhat larger when we return. Funny how when the word "implant" is used the bustline comes to mind. I hope they are not too disappointed that my figure has not changed!

I got new dentures on Dec 9, 2009, the implants were inserted into the bone on Dec 11, I got the stitches out on Dec 23. Very sore for several days. I have not been able to chew anything since then. I have mostly been eating soup, oatmeal and applesauce. I don't really like oatmeal, but when you are hungry enough anything tastes good. I could eat VERY SOFT foods that did not really require chewing. I went back to the dentist who made my new dentures once (1/6) and he did some adjustments but I continued to have sore spots and was unable to chew. Yesterday (1/21) I went back to the surgeon for the "snaps" to be added to my lower denture. What a difference! When I left there yesterday I came home, ate a baked chicken sandwich, some pecans and an apple! I could not believe that inserting the snaps to secure the lower denture would make such a difference. I am DELIGHTED!!!! I will have to visit the clinic at least two more times for them to evaluate the process. This is a research project and they follow it for several months (probably 18) to study the outcome. WOW - think I will go CHEW something!

Well the "jury" is in on the implants! They are wonderful!!! I can eat any and everything I want including nuts, cucumbers, apples and all the wonderful crunchy things I love. My biggest problem is not eating too much. I'm am truly a Miss Piggy.

The past week has been a busy one for me. I was in the "domestic diva" mode! I picked vegetables from the garden, canned the tomatoes and canned some for a friend. I also made blackberry jelly. I had picked the blackberries in the woods behind our house and prepared them for jelly making the week before. What a beautiful sight the jars of jelly and tomatoes were. I usually give almost all the jelly to friends/relatives as we eat very little jelly/jam. My friend is on a "no salt" diet so I canned her some tomatoes without the salt. As a finishing touch to the week, I cleaned the bathrooms thoroughly, washed the shower curtains and bought new rugs for DH's bath. Wow! today is PLAYDAY!!!!!!!!!!!

That's great to hear about the implants, nuts and all!

We must of both been bitten by the same domestic bug! Last Friday, when I was cleaning out my freezer, I found a stash of frozen bananas I had forgotten about, along with the few that I had in the front, so I decided to make banana bread - lots of banana bread, five loaves in fact. I put some toasted coconut, toasted pecans, cinnamon spice mix, and chocolate chips in them - yum! With five loaves in the freezer, we should be stocked for awhile!

I've always loved berries - back at my previous house, we had a long stone wall (left over from the civil war!) just covered in blackberries and raspberries, and then I had a small garden with strawberries. After visiting relatives in Montana last August, I got hooked on huckleberries as well. I haven't been able to find any locally, but Hubby ordered a jar of huckleberry jam on-line for my birthday. It just arrived today, and I'm needing to practice a lot of self-control to keep from going ahead and opening it up, even though it's been out in our 90 degree weather and is almost completely liquid! Once it sets back up though, I'm sure it will be fantastic!

Today, I spent about five hours in total housecleaning. I'm feeling exhausted now, but a deep cleaning every few months is a necessity when you have several pets and summer allergies. At least it's a good workout (that's what I keep telling myself)!

As the "regulars" on this site know, I am an aspiring poet. On each Sunday night at our church anyone can request a special song, sing a special song, tell a short story, or read a poem. I finally got together my courage, stepped up to the mike and read my poem "Is There A God?". I was very nervous, however I thought it went well and I got several compliments. Our church is very small, however when you are behind the pulpit and the mike it looks HUGE!! I have gained some confidence and plan to read another poem on the next fifth Sunday night (October 31). The title of this poem is "The Preacher's Wife". Hope they like it!

It's wonderful that you are able to share your poetry with your church. The poems which you've shared with us have been beautiful, and I'm sure the rest will be as well! Good luck for your next reading, I'm sure you'll do well! Maybe someday you could print the poems into a book - I've done this with photos from weddings before, and the results can be quite beautiful.

Thanks for the words of encouragement! One of my poems was published in the magazine "Wing World" a few years ago. This is a magazine for Gold Wing motorcycle riders. Two or three have been pubished in a local (community) newspaper. I have been writing a few more lately. I write one each year for my best friend's birthday and she always seems to enjoy and appreciate them. Thanks again, I'm working on my courage!
