Rats are fairly easy to entertain on the cheap. Some ideas:

  • Take a toliet paper or paper towel tube and smear a little peanut butter or other yummy treat on the inside (not too much!), as close to the middle as you can.
  • Crumble up a brown paper bag and toss it into their cage
  • Cut a small hole in a paper box (or, just use an empty tissue box, making sure to remove any plastic film) and let them use it to make a nest
  • Grab a glass wide mouth jar and toss a treat into the bottom. Next, fill it up with crumbled paper, and let your pet dig through the jar to find the goodies.
  • Ink free tissues and napkins are great fun to shred
  • Any clean cotton material (old towel, t-shirt, sock, etc.) that you no longer want can be fun to explore, climb through, and shred into nesting material.
