If you have leftover bread, such as the end pieces, don't throw it away (assuming it's not moldy!), make bread crumbs, instead! Store bought bread crumbs aren't terribly cost effective, so often what I do instead is take any bits of bread such as the ends or if I've had a loaf a bit too long and it's dried out, tear it into pieces, and allow to finish drying on a cookie sheet (I use the small one which came with my toaster oven, and store it in the oven with it turned off, to keep the bread clean). Once dry, toss in a food processor or blender, and grind to the desired coarseness. Since these crumbs may not have all of the extra preservatives which store bought ones do, I store mine in the freezer until needed.
