Take Pictures of Your Mementos To Reduce Clutter
After "collecting" a few wine bottles over the years so that I could remember the winerys from whence they came, I decided to take photos of their labels so I could recycle the originals. Since then, I have also used this method for recipes on the back of boxes, sea shells on the beach (rather than bringing a million home, I've started simply photographing them), and other simple items which I'd like to remember, or which are pretty, but which I don't necessarily need or want taking up space in my home.
While doing some research on-line this afternoon, I came across an article which offers other photography suggestions, such as mementos from past vacations, broken toys, clothes, etc. Once you're done photographing, you can decide if the item should be kept (photographs can be a great "insurance policy" in case the item ever gets lost, damaged, or destroyed), discarded (if broken), or donated (such as gently used clothing). Read more tips in the full article, found here:

I keep telling myself that I am going to photograph several guns that DH has. One is a 22 rifle he bought in Japan in about 1955. He had the stock beautifully carved and some ivory inset into it. I also have some handmade quilts that my Mother made more than 50 years ago - probably about 60 years. We also have some music equipment, including a very expensive guitar, that I need to make pictures of. I know we would need these "proofs" in case of fire or burglary. Making photos of keepsakes is also a good idea. Maybe this reminder is the kick in the butt that I needed!
